How to estimate calories when eating out
Restaurant meals rarely come with a complete recipe, so the goal is a reasonable, repeatable estimate rather than false precision. Log the visible main foods first, then add oils, sauces and drinks that are easy to miss.
Use official information first
Prefer a restaurant’s official nutrition data when available. For packaged or pre-packed meals, use the label and the number of servings actually eaten.
Split the meal
Estimate the staple, protein dish, vegetables, soup, dressing and drink separately. For shared dishes, record the portion you actually ate.
Keep a consistent rule
Reuse the same entry and portion for meals you order often. Adjust when you clearly ate more or less instead of guessing the entire recipe again.
