How to track macros
Macro tracking starts with one food and one portion. Confirm the food and weight first, then review carbohydrate, protein and fat without mixing entries from different preparations.
Where macros come from
Carbohydrate is common in grains, starchy vegetables, fruit and sugars. Protein comes from meat, eggs, dairy, legumes and more. Fat includes cooking oil as well as fat in meat, nuts, dairy and processed foods.
Fat is easy to miss
Cooking oil, dressings, nut butter and oil absorbed during frying are difficult to infer from a photo. Add them from a recipe, label or reasonable portion.
Converting grams to calories
USDA’s general factors are about 4 kcal per gram for carbohydrate and protein and 9 kcal per gram for fat. Labels can differ slightly because of fibre, sugar alcohols and rounding rules.
