How to start a simple food diary

A food diary does not need perfect accuracy on day one. Start by consistently recording what you ate, roughly how much and when; add weights, condiments and drinks as the habit becomes easier.

Choose the fastest logging method

  • Clear meal, uncertain name: scan the photo and review it.
  • Known food: search manually or use a quick calorie entry.
  • Repeated meal: copy a recent meal and adjust the portion.

What belongs in a useful entry?

Keep the food name, portion, meal and time. Review protein, carbohydrate and fat when you want more detail, and prefer the package label for packaged foods.

Review days and trends

A single day can reveal missing items; several days reveal patterns. Body weight also changes with hydration, sodium and measurement timing, so record it under similar conditions and read the trend.

Consistency before precision

One missed item does not invalidate the day. Add what you remember and continue with the next meal. Oils, sauces, drinks and snacks are common omissions.
