How to track calories for fat loss

The purpose of a fat-loss log is not to judge every bite; it is to create a repeatable baseline. Consistent food, activity and weight trends are more informative than one day of numbers.

Record your current baseline

Log several days of normal eating before chasing a very low target. Include drinks, snacks, cooking oil and sauces, which are easier to miss than the main food.

Use trends to correct estimates

Energy requirements and food portions both contain uncertainty. Keep the method consistent, weigh under similar conditions and use several weeks of trend data before adjusting.

Calories are not the whole diet

A diet still needs adequate protein, fats, carbohydrates, fibre and micronutrients. CDC guidance favors gradual, steady weight loss supported by eating patterns, physical activity, sleep and stress management.
